What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept Visa, Mastercard & Discover through HornStash.com. We also accept cash when making a purchase in person at our showroom in Palatine, IL.

Unfortunately, we do not accept American Express as a standard form of payment. American Express charges a more expensive rate for their processing costs than Visa, MasterCard or Discover. If you provide an American Express card as your chosen form of payment at checkout, we will contact you to either (1) provide an alternative credit card number from a Visa, MasterCard or Discover account, or (2) authorize a 3% surcharge to cover the additional processing fees.

How do I know if something on the website is in stock?

All instruments listed in the "Instruments in Stock" section are in stock. We strive to update our website daily and remove any instruments that have been sold that day. In the rare instance that an instrument was sold and the website was not yet updated, we would not charge your credit card if you placed an order for that instrument.

All instruments listed in the "New Instruments" sections that do not appear in the "Instruments in Stock" section will need to be ordered from the manufacturer.

Some Mouthpieces, Accessories & Cases are in stock. Some need to be ordered from the manufacturer. Contact us to find out if an item is currently in stock.

Do you have a trial period?

No, we do not have a trial period. We do, however, have a return policy (See “Do You Accept Returns? below).

Do you buy instruments, or take trades?

Typically, we sell instruments on consignment, meaning that we act as a broker to sell an instrument on your behalf.  We occasionally purchase instruments on the spot, and sometimes we accept a trade towards a new instrument, depending on the circumstances. Please view the link titled “Sell Your Instrument” for specifics and further details.

Do you ship instruments, and how much does shipping cost?

Yes, we are happy to ship your instrument or accessory purchase to you.  HornStash.com automatically generates a shipping estimate based upon whatever item(s) you purchase. While this shipping cost is usually accurate, it is on occasion incorrect. In such an occurrence, we will contact you with a firm shipping quote, and we will not charge your credit card until you have authorized the shipping quote.

Will you ship to a different address than the billing address?

In order to prevent fraudulent credit card activity, we can only ship to the billing address of the credit card you pay with.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, we ship internationally, and we have shipped instruments to nearly every continent on the planet! Please contact us for a shipping quote for international shipping. Unfortunately, due to excessive costs, we cannot ship oversize instruments, such as tubas and sousaphone, internationally.

Also, we will not declare a lower value of a purchase to avoid duties or taxes. We understand that some countries have excessive fees, taxes and tariffs on imported items, but we can only generate receipts for the actual cost of merchandise. Please note that import taxes, duties, fees, and any other cost associated with shipping an order is the buyer’s responsibility.

What method of shipping do you use?

We ship via FedEx, UPS or USPS for domestic orders. For international orders we only ship via USPS.

We will ship oversize instruments (such as tubas and sousaphones) via Amtrak and only to the contiguous 48 states. The cost is usually $300 - $400, and a large portion of the cost is handling time to prepare and pack the instrument.

Does a used instrument include everything that it had when it was sold new?

Used instruments do not always include everything that came with it when it was new. The original case, mouthpiece, accessories, etc. might have been replaced, removed, or forgotten by a previous owner. If something is not shown in a picture of the instrument, and is not mentioned as being included in the description, you should assume it is no longer with the instrument and is not included in the sale.  If you have any questions as to what comes with a used instrument beyond what is pictured and what is described, please contact us before purchasing that instrument. We are happy to take a look inside the case (if there is a case) and tell you if something else is there that you are hoping to find.

Is there a warranty on an instrument that I purchase from Horn Stash?

Used instruments do not include any type of warranty, neither from Horn Stash or the manufacturer. The condition of the instrument is stated in the listing, and our used instruments are certified to be in good working condition at the time of sale. Unless a listing is stated “As Is”, any necessary repair work is completed prior to listing the instrument for sale. You may purchase with confidence any instrument we list for sale, but please understand that any repairs that become necessary after the instrument has left our store will be your responsibility. We are always happy to provide any needed repair services for instruments we have previously sold, but standard repair rates will apply.

New instruments purchased from Horn Stash will carry all of the manufacturer’s warranties.

Do you accept returns?

Most items may be returned within 7 days of receipt. There is a 15% re-stocking fee, and shipping costs & return shipping costs are non-refundable. Additionally, the following items are not eligible for returns:

  1. Special Order & Non-Stock instruments, mouthpieces, accessories and cases
  2. Items that are purchased via financing
  3. Mouthpieces, both new and used
  4. Sheet Music
  5. Any item(s) shipped internationally

Items eligible for return must be returned in exactly the same condition they were in when they were sold. The old adage "You break it, you bought it" applies.

Will you make a Special Order for me?

Yes, we are happy to order something not in stock, but please keep in mind a Special Order requires a 50% down-payment. Once the down-payment is received, you are committed to purchasing the special ordered item. In the event that you back out of the purchase, any money that you have paid towards the special order is non-refundable. Additionally, you may not special order one item, but then switch your purchase to a different special order item, nor exchange it towards a different item in stock.
